Glacial ice is so compressed that most of its air is squeezed out. It absorbs red light, so blue is what reaches your eyes.
Why do seals nap on floating ice?
An ice floe gives them somewhere to rest, digest and molt, away from the orcas hunting below.
When are the whales busiest?
Humpbacks spend the southern summer feeding on krill, and March is the peak of whale season.

Why is Ilulissat Icefjord UNESCO-listed?
Its glacier, Sermeq Kujalleq, is one of the fastest-moving and most active in the world, and it keeps the fjord packed with icebergs.
Does the sun set in June?
Not in Disko Bay. Ilulissat sits about 300 km (185 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, so in late June the sun stays up all night.
How much of Greenland is ice?
About 80%. The ice sheet feeds glaciers that spill down into fjords like this one on the east coast.
Who sailed this way first?
Norse settlers from Iceland, led by Erik the Red, reached South Greenland in the 980s. Greenland Explorer follows their sea route.
