Sisimiut: Catch’n Eat – Fishing Experience

Reel In Your Own Dinner off the Coast of Sisimiut

There’s something deeply satisfying about eating a meal you caught with your own hands. On this half-day excursion, you head out onto the waters around Sisimiut with a local guide, learn the traditional art of pilking, and try your luck with cod or wolffish beneath the mountains of West Greenland.

Then comes the best part. Back on shore, local chefs turn your catch into a shared dinner, served at least three ways, with a glass of wine, beer, or soft drink to toast the one that got away.

Taking Part in a Millennia-old Tradition

Fishing has shaped life here for generations. At the start of the 20th century, most Greenlanders still lived by subsistence hunting and fishing. In the early 1920s, warming waters brought cod to West Greenland in huge numbers, and by the 1960s, annual catches had reached 400,000 to 500,000 tons. When the cod vanished in the 1970s, the industry turned to shrimp, and Sisimiut was one of the towns that prospered as a fishing center through that shift. So when you drop your line here, you’re taking part in a tradition that has shaped modern Greenland.

Activity Overview

Your adventure begins in Sisimiut’s harbor, where you step on board a 12-passenger Targa boat and head toward the fishing grounds near Mount Palasi. Once you’re out on the water, your guide shows you the traditional pilking technique: jigging, a weighted lure up and down beneath the boat to tempt the fish below.

Then it’s your turn. Drop your line and try your luck with local species such as cod and wolffish.

After about two hours on the water, you return to Sisimiut with the day’s catch. The experience continues at a local restaurant, where chefs clean your fish and prepare it in at least three different ways. You sit down together for a true sea-to-table dinner, swapping stories from the boat over the fish you hauled in yourself.
