Why Choose a Halal-Friendly Departure?
The polar regions belong to everyone. Getting there shouldn’t depend on whether the ship happens to serve food you can eat, or whether you’re comfortable using our common areas and facilities. On our halal-friendly expeditions, the galley works to a halal specification for the whole voyage, soft drinks and mocktails are offered with lunch and dinner, and the wellness center runs a rotating schedule of men-only, women-only, and mixed hours. None of it is arranged plate by plate or hour by hour on request: it’s simply how the ship runs, for every guest on board.
Everything else is the expedition you’d expect from us: the same itineraries, the same expedition team, the same activities. Just on a ship where more people can feel at home.
Your Halal-Friendly Expedition
From the moment you board, here’s what’s arranged differently, and what stays as it is on any Polar Latitudes Expeditions voyage.
1. Halal-Friendly Dining
On any of our halal-friendly departures, our galley works to a single specification from embarkation to disembarkation. Meat is sourced from certified halal suppliers, no pork or lard is served anywhere on board, and no alcohol is used in cooking or baking. The specification applies equally in the main restaurant, at the outdoor grill, at the bar, and in the observation lounge. Our chefs cook the same varied, generous menus you’d find on any of our voyages, adapted to what’s available this far north or south.
2. Multiple Drinking Options
Soft drinks and mocktails are offered with lunch and dinner; tea, coffee, and water are available around the clock at no charge, and every cabin has a refrigerator stocked with soft drinks, juice, and sparkling water. To make our halal-friendly expeditions even more inclusive for all our guests, alcohol is available at the bar and with meals for those who wish to drink, and the bar operates as it does on any of our sailings.
3. Thoughtful Wellness
The wellness center on Deck 6 includes a sauna, steam room, and a treatment room. Throughout the voyage, we run a rotating schedule of men-only, women-only, and mixed hours across the whole center, managed by our team and published each day alongside the expedition program, so you’ll always know which hours apply before you go. The fitness center on Deck 4 runs its own rotating schedule of men-only, women-only, and mixed hours, published the same way.
4. Ashore and on Board Activities
Nothing about the expedition itself changes. You’ll join the same Zodiac cruises and shore landings, led by the same expedition team, and take part in the same lecture program as any other guest sailing that itinerary. Here are some of the activities we offer you:
Discover Kayaking – $350
This optional activity is for guests who want a taste of the Antarctic kayaking experience. Each participant kayaks once per voyage in a group of up to 14, accompanied by a dedicated guide team and safety Zodiac. The total number of kayaking spots available on each departure varies by itinerary length and weather conditions, but we aim to get groups on the water at every opportunity.
On Board Photography Coach – Included
Our photography coaches are always on hand to offer advice during Zodiac cruises, onshore landings, and from the deck. They will also document your expedition, and you’ll receive a digital keepsake to share with friends and family back home.
Citizen Science – Included
All guests have the opportunity to help collect data for ongoing, real-world scientific research projects. There are a number of initiatives you can take part in, so be sure to review the sign-up sheets when you board the ship.
Polar Plunge – Included
It may sound like a crazy thing to do, but there are plenty of reasons why hurling yourself into freezing-cold water is one of our most popular activities.
Embarking on Discoverer and Your Cabin
From your hotel in Ushuaia, we’ll transfer you to Discoverer, our boutique expedition vessel designed for polar exploration. Agile and modernly refurbished, Discoverer allows its passengers to visit remote bays and landing sites across the Peninsula in comfort. On board, you can find a variety of staterooms, many with private balconies or Juliet balconies:
Porthole Stateroom
Located on Deck 3, accommodates two guests in twin beds or one queen. Two portholes that do not open. Our most budget-friendly option.
Ocean Stateroom
Located on Deck 3, accommodates two guests in twin beds or one queen. Large picture window that does not open. Twenty on board, and ideal for those prone to seasickness.
Solo Vista Stateroom
Located on Deck 4, accommodates one guest in a queen bed. Large picture window that does not open. Three on board — designed specifically for solo travelers with no single supplement.
Vista Stateroom
Located on Deck 4, accommodates two guests in twin beds or one queen. Large picture window that does not open. Twenty-two on board — the most prevalent cabin class on the ship.
Balcony Stateroom
Located on Deck 5, accommodates two guests in twin beds or one queen. Juliet balcony with full-height glass doors that open, but without outdoor seating. Eight on board, and ideal for those guests who want to enjoy fresh air and listen to the sound of the Polar regions from the comfort of their own cabins.
Discovery Suite
Located on Deck 5, accommodates up to three guests in twin beds or one queen plus a convertible sofa. Two Juliet balconies with glass doors that open. Six on board.
Navigator Stateroom
Located on Deck 7, accommodates two guests in twin beds or one queen. Private balcony with outdoor seating. The staterooms with the best view.
Grand Suite
Located on Deck 7, accommodates up to three guests in a sofa bed and twin beds or one queen. Private balcony with outdoor seating. Two on board — features a separate sitting area and a marble bathroom with a full tub.
Owner’s Suite
Located on Deck 7, accommodates up to three guests in one sofa bed and in twin beds or one queen. Private balcony with outdoor seating. Two on board — our largest cabins, with a separate living room and walk-in closet.
